Early Career and Baramulla Posting
After completing his training at the prestigious Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Sujit Kumar Singh joined the Indian Police Service with a determination to take on the most demanding assignments.
His probation posting came in Baramulla in 2009, a turbulent period marked by the aftermath of the 2008 Amarnath land row. As SHO Baramulla, Singh played a pivotal role in the conduct of the 2009 Parliamentary elections, followed by the State Assembly elections. Despite repeated injuries during violent law-and-order situations, he demonstrated exceptional resilience and professionalism.
Tackling Terrorism in Mahore
In 2010, Singh was posted as SDPO Mahore, one of the remotest and most terrorism-infested subdivisions of Jammu & Kashmir. His fearless operations weakened militancy in the area, earning him the respect of both colleagues and civilians. To this day, the people of Mahore remember him as an officer of honesty, hard work, and professionalism.
This success led to his elevation as SP South Srinagar in 2011, followed by Additional SP Budgam. In these roles, Singh once again displayed his ability to manage high-stakes law-and-order challenges and counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir.
Traffic Reforms and High-Altitude Policing
Later, Singh was appointed as SSP Traffic Jammu and Rural Jammu. He introduced innovative measures to streamline traffic management in Jammu city and on the Lakhanpur–Jammu National Highway.
In 2013, he took charge as SSP Kargil, where he faced the extreme challenges of high-altitude policing in sub-zero temperatures. His adaptability and leadership skills stood out in these testing conditions.
Ensuring Shrine Security in Reasi
As SSP Reasi in 2015, Singh focused on the safety and security of two of the region’s most important religious shrines—Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and Shri Shivkhori Ji. His dedication ensured secure pilgrimages for millions of devotees, strengthening public trust in the police force.
National-Level Service: SPG and SSB
In October 2016, Singh was deputed to the Special Protection Group (SPG) for the security of the Prime Minister. Later, he joined the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) as Commandant, commanding two battalions in Jharkhand’s Naxal-hit areas.
He led numerous anti-Naxal operations in Dumka, Pakur, Godda, Hazaribagh, and Khunti districts, while simultaneously engaging with local populations to build trust. His operations against illegal opium cultivation—leading to the destruction of thousands of acres—were widely reported in the media. His balanced approach between firmness and cooperation earned him respect from both superiors and subordinates.
DIG of Jammu–Kathua–Samba Range
In 2019, Singh returned to Jammu & Kashmir as DIG of the Jammu–Kathua–Samba Range, a sensitive region along the international border. He coordinated closely with the BSF, CRPF, and Intelligence Bureau to fortify security and also invested in grassroots engagement with frontier villagers.

Known for his field presence, Singh often visited sensitive border locations unannounced to assess ground realities, winning the confidence of both officers and civilians.
Further DIG Assignments Across J&K
He later served as DIG Udhampur–Reasi Range, overseeing the safety of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji pilgrims, aerial corridors, and the National Highway up to Ramban.
From 2021 to August 2024, Singh held key postings as DIG North Kashmir, DIG Central Kashmir (with additional charge of DIG South Kashmir), and DIG CID Kashmir. His leadership during counter-terrorism operations and law-and-order situations in these highly volatile regions reinforced his reputation as a field-oriented officer.
Elevation to Inspector General of Police
In recognition of his professionalism, Singh was elevated to Inspector General of Police (Security), Jammu & Kashmir—a critical role tasked with safeguarding VVIPs and vital installations.
One of his most demanding responsibilities was overseeing security arrangements for the annual Amarnath Yatra. Recognizing the scale and complexity of the task, Singh introduced several modern innovations, including:
- Integrated multi-agency control rooms
- Drone-based aerial surveillance
- Satellite monitoring for real-time situational awareness
- Pre-yatra orientation programs for police and paramilitary forces
These measures ensured improved coordination, enhanced safety for lakhs of pilgrims, and minimal disruption to civilian life.

- Forensic-led investigations
- Data analytics for crime trend analysis

By encouraging younger officers and fostering a collaborative culture, he strengthened investigative standards across the Crime Wing.
