OCT 11:In a significant step towards strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s sports ecosystem, Minister Satish Sharma met Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, to seek enhanced central support for developing world-class sports infrastructure and expanding youth engagement programs across the Union Territory.
During the meeting, Minister Sharma underscored the immense potential of J&K’s youth and highlighted the region’s growing reputation as a hub for winter sports. He strongly advocated the establishment of a National Winter Sports Centre at Gulmarg, envisioning it as a flagship facility under the Khelo India initiative. The proposed centre aims to nurture young athletes, promote adventure tourism, and position Gulmarg as a premier destination for both national and international winter sports events.
Minister Sharma also emphasized the need for dedicated funding under the Khelo India Scheme, pointing out that greater investment in sports infrastructure, training facilities, and talent identification programs would not only empower youth but also boost employment and tourism. He stressed the importance of creating integrated sports complexes, skill development initiatives, and regular inter-district sports events to ensure holistic youth engagement.
Union Minister Dr. Mandaviya appreciated the proposal and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to supporting the Union Territory’s efforts in promoting sports and youth-led development. He noted that the Government of India is keen on ensuring equitable access to sports facilities and nurturing talent from every corner of the country, especially from regions like Jammu and Kashmir, which hold unique potential in disciplines like skiing, ice hockey, and mountaineering.
The meeting concluded with a shared vision of transforming J&K into a vibrant sports and youth empowerment hub, aligning with the national goals of fitness, inclusion, and excellence.
