Aug 21: Srinagar is set to witness a historic sporting moment today as the first-ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) begins at the picturesque Dal Lake in Jammu & Kashmir. Organized under the flagship Khelo India initiative of the Government of India, the three-day national-level event marks a new chapter in promoting water sports in the region.
The festival has drawn participation from over 400 top athletes representing 36 states and Union Territories, who will compete fiercely in rowing, kayaking, and canoeing. With 24 gold medals at stake, the competition promises to showcase speed, endurance, and sporting excellence against the breathtaking backdrop of the Zabarwan Mountains and Dal Lake’s shimmering waters.
The event not only highlights India’s growing emphasis on sports development but also places Jammu & Kashmir at the forefront of aquatic sporting activities. Officials emphasized that the festival will act as a catalyst for nurturing local talent while giving athletes from across the country a chance to compete in one of the most unique natural venues in the world.
