AUG 18: Muhammad Rafiq Malla, a Shikarawala from the picturesque Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, has praised the Khelo India initiative for its transformative impact on the Valley’s sports and tourism sectors. Speaking to reporters, Malla reflected on how the arrival of the Khelo India Water Sports Festival has breathed fresh life into the region, creating new opportunities for local residents and attracting sports enthusiasts from across the country.

According to Malla, the event has not only showcased the natural beauty of Dal Lake but has also given a significant boost to tourism in the Valley. “For years, the people here have relied heavily on tourism for their livelihood. Khelo India has helped put Kashmir back in the spotlight and brought a renewed sense of hope for Shikarawalas like me,” he said.

He noted that the event has encouraged the participation of local youth in water sports and inspired many to pursue their passion for athletics. With more competitions and training sessions being held in the Valley, Malla believes that young people now have greater access to sports facilities and opportunities to represent their region on a national stage.

Malla also highlighted the importance of the initiative in changing perceptions about the region. “Events like Khelo India show the world that Kashmir is not only blessed with natural beauty but also rich in talent and enthusiasm for sports,” he added.

The Shikarawala expressed gratitude to the Sports Authority of India and the organisers for choosing Kashmir as the host venue and urged authorities to continue organising such events regularly. He believes that sustained focus on sports and tourism will strengthen the local economy, promote cultural exchange and foster a spirit of unity and peace in the Valley.
