Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Elections Departments, Javid Ahmad Dar, addressed the ONE Health Conference organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Veterinary Doctors Association–Kashmir (JKVDA-K) at SKUAST-K today. The event brought together senior officials, scientists, researchers, and students to discuss collaborative approaches to human, animal, and environmental health.

A Strong Call for Collective Action

While speaking at the conference, Javid Dar stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among multiple departments and stakeholders. He noted that the concept of One Health requires shared responsibility and continuous cooperation.

“We must come together to address the pressing issues of human, animal, and environmental health,”
the Minister said, highlighting the need for joint action to achieve meaningful outcomes.

He also appreciated the efforts of the veterinary community and academic institutions for promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

Leaders Emphasize Importance of Coordination

The conference was chaired by Dr. Syed Altaf Gilani, Chairman of the ONE Health Conference. He underscored the growing importance of strong institutional linkages to manage emerging health challenges.

Dr. Riyaz Nazir Reshi, President of JKVDA-K, also addressed the gathering. He highlighted the increasing relevance of the One Health approach in the face of rising health threats affecting humans, animals, and ecosystems.

Both speakers emphasized that close coordination among departments is essential to achieve shared goals in disease prevention, surveillance, and response.

Focus on Antimicrobial Resistance and Zoonotic Diseases

A key highlight of the conference was a series of insightful presentations and a panel discussion on the One Health framework. Speakers discussed urgent issues such as:

  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

  • Zoonotic diseases

  • Environmental health threats

  • Cross-sectoral disease monitoring

Experts reiterated that AMR and zoonotic diseases cannot be managed in isolation. Instead, they require coordinated strategies involving medical, veterinary, and environmental sectors. The discussion also stressed the importance of public awareness and community participation to strengthen disease-prevention systems.
