Jan 26: The nation is celebrating its 77th Republic Day today, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of India and reaffirming the country’s democratic values. The main celebrations are being held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, led by President Droupadi Murmu with full ceremonial splendour.

The day began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National War Memorial, where he laid a wreath and led the nation in paying solemn tributes to the fallen heroes who laid down their lives in the service of the country. The gesture set a tone of remembrance and gratitude for the Republic Day समारोह.

President Droupadi Murmu arrived at Kartavya Path in a ceremonial buggy, accompanied by the chief guests of the Republic Day paradePresident of the European Council Antonio Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Their presence highlighted India’s growing global engagement and strong ties with the European Union.

Following her arrival, the National Flag was unfurled, and the National Anthem was played, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, marking the formal commencement of the Republic Day parade. The ceremonial proceedings reflected India’s rich traditions, military discipline and cultural diversity.

On the occasion, President Murmu conferred the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, recognising exemplary courage and supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. The honour underscored the bravery and dedication of India’s armed forces.

The Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path continue with the traditional parade showcasing the strength of India’s defence forces, vibrant cultural tableaux from states and Union Territories, and a display of the nation’s achievements and aspirations.

As India marks 77 years as a Republic, the occasion serves as a reminder of the ideals enshrined in the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality and fraternity—and the collective resolve to build a strong, inclusive and developed nation.
