MARCH 28: The 14th edition of the Indian-Russia bilateral naval exercise INDRA is set to take place off Chennai. A key symbol of the enduring maritime partnership between India and Russia, Exercise INDRA has become a cornerstone of their long-term strategic relationship. Since its inception in 2003, the exercise has played a vital role in fostering mutual cooperation between the two navies.

The exercise serves as a major platform for enhancing naval interoperability, operational synergy, and maritime cooperation between the two nations. As the exercise has evolved over the years, it has come to symbolize the shared commitment to strengthening ties through collaborative naval operations.

The 14th edition of INDRA will be conducted in two distinct phases: the Harbour Phase, which will be held from 28th to 30th March 2025 in Chennai, and the Sea Phase, set to take place from 31st March to 2nd April 2025 in the Bay of Bengal.

During the Harbour Phase, the exercise will include several key activities such as an opening ceremony, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs), reciprocal visits, sports fixtures, and pre-sail briefings between personnel from both navies. These interactions aim to promote better understanding and strengthen professional ties between the Indian and Russian naval forces.

The Sea Phase will feature more advanced operations, focusing on enhancing tactical coordination between the two navies. This phase will include live weapon firings, tactical manoeuvres, anti-air operations, underway replenishment, and helicopter cross-deck landings. Additionally, the exchange of sea-riders will allow personnel from both navies to gain hands-on experience and improve coordination during the joint drills.

Russian naval ships Pechanga, Rezkiy, and Aldar Tsydenzhapov, along with Indian naval ships Rana, Kuthar, and maritime patrol aircraft P8I, will participate in the exercise. These ships and aircraft will engage in various maritime operations, enhancing the operational effectiveness of both forces and promoting interoperability.

The exercise is designed not only to advance maritime cooperation but also to foster stronger diplomatic relations, strengthen the bonds of friendship between India and Russia, and ensure the exchange of best operational practices. The successful completion of these drills will further consolidate the strategic maritime partnership between the two countries, paving the way for more collaborative efforts in the future.
