AUG 12: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today carried out an on-the-spot review of the ongoing restoration works at the historic Shalimar Garden in Srinagar. The restoration project is being implemented under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the JSW Foundation, with the aim of reviving the centuries-old Mughal-era landmark while enhancing facilities for visitors.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister interacted with engineers, conservation experts, and officials overseeing the work. He emphasised that while infrastructure upgrades and modern visitor amenities are important, the restoration must remain true to the site’s original heritage character and architectural integrity. “Preserving the cultural and historical essence of Shalimar Garden is as vital as improving tourist facilities,” he said.
Omar Abdullah also reviewed the timelines for completion of the project, directing concerned departments and executing agencies to ensure that the work is finished within the stipulated schedule without compromising on quality. He stressed the importance of using heritage-sensitive materials and designs so that the authenticity of the Mughal garden’s unique layout and charm is maintained.
The Chief Minister noted that the restored garden, once completed, will not only be a source of pride for the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also a major attraction for domestic and international tourists. He appreciated the JSW Foundation for its support through the CSR programme and encouraged more such collaborations for heritage conservation across the Union Territory.
Officials informed that the restoration plan includes repair of water channels, revitalisation of lawns and flower beds, strengthening of pathways, improved lighting, and installation of visitor-friendly amenities.
Shalimar Garden, built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the 17th century, remains one of the most celebrated symbols of Kashmir’s cultural heritage. The ongoing project aims to safeguard this legacy for future generations while making it more accessible and enjoyable for the public.
