Jan 28: NEW DELHI: The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has clarified that only two confirmed cases of Nipah Virus disease have been reported in West Bengal from December last year to date, dismissing speculative and incorrect figures circulated in certain sections of the media.
The clarification was issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare following reports that exaggerated the number of Nipah Virus cases, causing unnecessary public concern. The Ministry emphasised that the official data confirms just two cases during the stated period.
According to the Ministry, after confirmation of the two cases, the government immediately activated comprehensive public health response measures in line with established national and international protocols. These measures included rapid surveillance, contact tracing, isolation, and testing to prevent any further spread of the virus.
As part of the containment efforts, a total of 196 contacts linked to the confirmed cases were identified, traced, closely monitored, and tested. The Ministry stated that all these contacts tested negative for the Nipah Virus, providing reassurance that there has been no secondary transmission.
The Health Ministry further confirmed that no additional Nipah Virus cases have been detected in West Bengal so far. It added that the situation continues to remain under constant monitoring by central and state health authorities, with all necessary preparedness and response measures firmly in place.
Officials reiterated that the public health system is fully alert and capable of responding swiftly to any emerging health threats. Surveillance activities have been strengthened, and coordination between central and state agencies remains robust to ensure early detection and rapid response, if required.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also issued an advisory urging the public and media organisations to rely only on verified information released through official government channels. It cautioned against the spread of unverified or speculative reports, noting that misinformation can lead to unnecessary panic and undermine public health efforts.
Nipah Virus is a zoonotic disease known for its high fatality rate, making timely information and responsible reporting crucial. The government assured citizens that transparency and public safety remain top priorities and that accurate updates will continue to be shared as required.
