Jan 24: After a prolonged dry spell, weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh have witnessed a significant shift with the activation of a western disturbance, bringing the season’s first widespread and heavy snowfall to most parts of the state. High-altitude and tribal regions have been receiving continuous snowfall since last night, while lower areas experienced rainfall accompanied by strong winds, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures and intensification of cold wave conditions.

Snowfall has been reported across several districts, including Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Chamba, along with the higher reaches of Mandi and Sirmaur. The changing weather pattern has had a visible impact across the region, with icy conditions setting in and daily life slowing down in snow-bound areas.

In the state capital, Shimla, snowfall began early in the morning and continued throughout the day, transforming the city into a winter spectacle. Tourist hotspot Manali also received its first snowfall of the winter season, sparking excitement among tourists and boosting the winter tourism vibe. Hotels and popular viewpoints in Manali witnessed increased footfall as visitors rushed to enjoy the fresh snow.

The weather change has brought relief and optimism among farmers and orchardists across the hill state. Agricultural experts believe that sufficient cold conditions and snowfall are essential for improving fruit quality and enhancing overall production, particularly for apple orchards, which are a key contributor to Himachal Pradesh’s rural economy.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall and rain in parts of Chamba, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti districts for today. A yellow alert has also been sounded for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi districts due to the possibility of hailstorms and adverse weather conditions.

According to the department, inclement weather is likely to persist in the state tomorrow as well, prompting authorities to advise residents and travellers to remain cautious. Commuters heading to higher altitudes have been urged to follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel in snow-prone areas.

As Himachal Pradesh embraces its first major winter spell, the snowfall has not only heightened the scenic charm of the region but has also underscored the need for preparedness amid challenging weather conditions.
