NOV 21: The Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR) organised an Orientation and Awareness Programme on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, 2013, aimed at strengthening workplace safety and fostering a culture of dignity and equality. The session was conducted under the chairpersonship of the Economic Adviser, who also heads the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the department.
Ms. Janvi Satpal Babbar, Advocate and External Member of the ICC, delivered a detailed presentation covering the key provisions of the POSH Act and the corresponding rules. Her address highlighted legal definitions, responsibilities of employers, complaint mechanisms and preventive measures mandated under the law.
The programme was designed to help employees gain a deeper understanding of both the statutory framework and the broader intent of the Act — ensuring a respectful and secure work environment for all.
The POSH Act, enacted in 2013 following the Supreme Court’s landmark Vishaka judgment, serves as a comprehensive legal safeguard for women in the workplace. It mandates the constitution of Internal Complaints Committees in all organisations with ten or more employees, emphasising not just the redressal of complaints but also proactive initiatives such as awareness sessions, sensitisation drives and capacity building.
Through such programmes, DoWR, RD & GR aims to promote a gender-sensitive work culture and strengthen institutional mechanisms to prevent and address workplace harassment effectively.
