The occasion holds deep spiritual and social significance, especially among followers of the Bhakti movement and devotees who revere the saint’s message of equality and social harmony.
Sant Ravidas was a 14th-century saint, poet and social reformer, and is regarded as one of the prominent founders of the Bhakti movement in North India. Through his teachings and devotional poetry, he challenged social discrimination and advocated a society based on love, compassion and human dignity.
Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated on Magh Purnima, the full moon day of the Magh month, according to the Hindu calendar. On this auspicious day, thousands of devotees gather at Sri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan Mandir in Seer Goverdhanpur, Varanasi, believed to be the birthplace of Sant Ravidas, to offer prayers and participate in religious and cultural programmes.
Special prayers, kirtans and community gatherings are organised at temples and religious centres across the country. The celebrations reflect the enduring influence of Sant Ravidas’ philosophy, which emphasises devotion beyond caste and social barriers.
