Jammu, February 24: The Commissioner of Jammu Municipal Corporation, Dr. Devansh Yadav, conducted an extensive field inspection of Wards 63 and 65 to assess civic amenities and address pressing concerns related to drainage and sanitation.
The visit was aimed at taking first-hand stock of issues raised by residents, particularly those concerning overflowing drains, street cleanliness, and the need for new drainage infrastructure.
Storm Water Drain in Chinor Under Review
During his inspection of Ward No. 63 in Chinor, the Commissioner examined the condition of a major stormwater drain following repeated complaints from locals. Residents informed him that the drain frequently overflows during the rainy season, resulting in waterlogging, disruption of daily activities, and damage to nearby properties and roads.
Taking serious note of the grievances, Dr. Yadav directed the engineering wing to carry out a detailed technical assessment of the existing drainage system to determine the causes of overflow. He instructed the Executive Engineer to prepare a comprehensive estimate for strengthening and remodeling the drain to ensure smooth rainwater flow and prevent future flooding incidents.
The Commissioner also reviewed the overall sanitation scenario in the ward, inspecting the cleanliness of streets, lanes, and public spaces. He emphasized the importance of regular desilting of drains before the onset of the monsoon season to minimize water stagnation and public inconvenience.
New Drainage Plans for Bantalab, Barnai, and Ganganagar
In Ward No. 65, which covers Bantalab, Barnai, and Ganganagar areas, residents highlighted the lack of adequate drainage facilities in several localities. Chronic water stagnation during rains has remained a recurring issue, prompting demands for new drain construction and improvement of existing street infrastructure.
Responding promptly, Dr. Yadav directed the Executive Engineer to prepare a detailed project report along with cost estimates for the construction of new drains and the upgradation of streets in affected areas. He stressed that priority must be given to localities facing severe waterlogging and sanitation challenges.
Sanitation Drives to Be Intensified
To ensure improved service delivery, the Commissioner instructed the Health Officer, Dr. Vinod Sharma, to intensify sanitation drives across both wards. He also called for regular cleaning of drains and streets, along with strict monitoring of sanitation workers’ attendance and deployment to enhance accountability and efficiency.
Deputy Commissioner South JMC Sanjay Badiyal, Executive Engineer Rajesh Kumar, Chief Transport Officer Ranjan Sharma, and other senior officials accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.
The team interacted with residents at multiple locations to better understand ground realities and assured them of timely action to resolve civic issues.
The inspection underscores the Jammu Municipal Corporation’s commitment to strengthening urban infrastructure and ensuring improved drainage and sanitation facilities for residents ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
