New Delhi, August 21, 2026: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued fresh guidelines for the re-verification of existing mobile connections identified through the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), strengthening measures aimed at ensuring compliance with prescribed limits on mobile connections.
Under the new guidelines, an individual subscriber can have a maximum of nine mobile connections across all Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and Licensed Service Areas (LSAs).
However, a lower limit of six mobile connections will apply to subscribers in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the North-East LSAs.
The revised verification process is intended to identify connections that exceed the permitted limits and ensure that subscriber records remain compliant with telecommunications regulations.
The Digital Intelligence Platform plays an important role in helping authorities identify and address potentially irregular mobile connections. The enhanced verification mechanism is expected to strengthen monitoring and reduce the possibility of additional connections being issued to subscribers who have already reached the prescribed limit.
For individual subscribers, the guidelines mean that the total number of mobile connections held across different telecom operators will be considered while determining compliance. In J&K, Assam and the North-East, subscribers will need to ensure that their total connections do not exceed the lower six-connection limit.
The move is part of wider efforts to strengthen the verification framework surrounding mobile connections and prevent misuse of telecom resources. Enhanced checks can also help telecom service providers maintain more accurate subscriber information and improve compliance with regulatory requirements.
The latest guidelines place greater emphasis on re-verification of existing connections identified through the DIP, rather than limiting scrutiny only to new mobile connections.
The strengthened system is expected to provide telecom authorities with better tools to identify connections beyond the prescribed limits and take appropriate action in accordance with the applicable rules.
With mobile phones playing an increasingly important role in banking, digital payments, government services and everyday communication, maintaining accurate and properly verified subscriber records remains an important aspect of India’s telecommunications framework.
The revised guidelines therefore seek to balance ease of access to mobile services with stronger verification and regulatory compliance, particularly in areas where a lower subscriber connection limit has been prescribed.
