AUG 30: Commissioner Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD), Mandeep Kaur, today toured several rain-affected areas of Jammu City to take stock of the damages caused by the recent spell of torrential rains. The heavy downpour severely impacted local infrastructure, disrupting road connectivity, drainage systems, and water supply in many localities.
During the visit, she was accompanied by senior engineers, municipal officials, and representatives of line departments. The Commissioner Secretary personally inspected damaged stretches of roads, clogged drainage networks, and waterlogged residential areas. She interacted with local residents to understand their immediate concerns and assured them of swift and coordinated government action.
Mandeep Kaur directed officials to ensure sustainable and long-term restoration of essential services instead of adopting temporary fixes. Stressing on quality work, she asked the agencies concerned to rebuild roads and drains with durable solutions to withstand future climatic challenges. She also instructed that uninterrupted drinking water supply should be restored at the earliest to minimize public hardship.
Emphasizing the importance of joint efforts, the HUDD Commissioner Secretary urged inter-departmental coordination for timely completion of restoration works. She also appealed for public cooperation, highlighting that community participation is vital for effective drainage management, prevention of waterlogging, and overall urban resilience.
Kaur reiterated the Government’s commitment under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure that all necessary resources are mobilized for rehabilitation and relief. She assured residents that the administration is closely monitoring the situation and that efforts are being made not just for immediate relief but also for building sustainable infrastructure to reduce the impact of future disasters.
Her on-ground review was welcomed by locals, who expressed hope that timely intervention by the administration would bring early relief and prevent recurrence of similar crises. The visit reinforced the Government’s proactive approach towards disaster management and its focus on safeguarding urban areas through long-term resilience planning.
