Jan 30: The nation today solemnly remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th Death Anniversary, observed annually as Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas). The day is dedicated to paying homage not only to the Father of the Nation but also to all freedom fighters and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence, unity, and democratic values.
On this occasion, a Sarva-Dharma Prarthana is being held at Gandhi Samadhi, Rajghat, New Delhi, reflecting Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring message of communal harmony, peace, and universal brotherhood. Leaders, dignitaries, and citizens from all walks of life gather to offer floral tributes and remember Gandhi’s timeless ideals of truth, non-violence, and moral courage.
Every year on 30 January, India marks this day to honour Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1948, and whose life remains a guiding light for the nation. His philosophy of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satyagraha (truthful resistance) not only shaped India’s freedom struggle but also inspired civil rights movements across the world.
Martyrs’ Day serves as a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters who laid down their lives to secure India’s sovereignty and democratic foundations. Schools, colleges, government institutions and social organisations across the country observe the day through prayer meetings, remembrance programmes and discussions on Gandhian values.
Gandhi’s legacy continues to resonate strongly in contemporary India, especially his emphasis on social harmony, self-reliance, ethical governance and peaceful coexistence. Observing Martyrs’ Day reinforces the collective responsibility of citizens to uphold constitutional values and work towards a just, inclusive and peaceful society.
As the nation bows its head in remembrance, the day stands as a reminder that the freedom enjoyed today is rooted in immense sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the ideals of justice and unity. The tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs is not only an act of remembrance but also a call to carry forward their vision for a stronger and more harmonious India.
