Jan 16: President Droupadi Murmu today graced the convocation ceremony of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar, where she highlighted the pivotal role of youth in shaping India’s future and stressed the importance of values-based higher education.
Addressing graduating students, the President said that the progress and destiny of India depend on young citizens who possess a scientific temper, act with responsibility, and are guided by a spirit of selfless service. She underlined that these qualities are essential not only for individual success but also for building a strong, inclusive, and progressive nation.
President Murmu urged higher education institutions to go beyond imparting academic knowledge and actively focus on nurturing ethical values, critical thinking, and social responsibility among students. She said universities must serve as centres of holistic development where innovation, discipline, and moral consciousness go hand in hand.
Highlighting the relevance of scientific temper in today’s rapidly evolving world, the President noted that rational thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and openness to new ideas are crucial for addressing contemporary challenges. She added that students equipped with these attributes would be better prepared to contribute meaningfully to sectors such as science, technology, governance, and social development.
The President also emphasised the need for youth to remain connected to the ideals of service and empathy. She said that true education inspires individuals to work not only for personal advancement but also for the welfare of society at large. Encouraging graduates to uphold the values of integrity and compassion, she said these principles would guide them in becoming responsible citizens and leaders.
Speaking about the legacy of Guru Nanak Dev University, President Murmu praised the institution for its contribution to education, research, and nation-building. She noted that universities rooted in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage have a special responsibility to promote harmony, inclusivity, and ethical conduct.
The convocation ceremony witnessed the awarding of degrees to students from various disciplines, marking an important milestone in their academic journey. Faculty members, university officials, and distinguished guests were present on the occasion, celebrating the achievements of the graduating class.
The President concluded her address by expressing confidence that the students of GNDU would carry forward the values of knowledge, service, and responsibility, and play an active role in shaping a resilient and forward-looking India.
