OCT 19:Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will pay homage to the martyrs on Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial (NPM) in New Delhi on Tuesday, 21st October 2025.
Police Commemoration Day is observed annually on October 21 to honor the sacrifices of valiant police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The day commemorates the martyrdom of ten courageous policemen who lost their lives in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, on 21st October 1959. Since then, October 21 has been a solemn occasion to remember all police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
The National Police Memorial, dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Police Commemoration Day in 2018, serves as a symbol of pride, unity, and shared purpose for India’s police forces. The memorial complex features a 30-foot granite Central Sculpture representing strength, resilience, and selfless service, a Wall of Valour engraved with the names of martyrs, and a museum chronicling the history and evolution of policing in India. It is a place of reverence for both police personnel and citizens and remains open to the public except on Mondays. CAPFs organize band displays, parades, and retreat ceremonies on weekends, starting one hour before sunset.
The main function in New Delhi will include a joint parade of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police, and Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, along with other dignitaries including MoS Home Affairs, MPs with police backgrounds, heads of CAPFs/CPOs, and retired officers, will lay wreaths to honor the martyrs. Shri Rajnath Singh will also address the assembly, remembering the bravery and outlining the challenges of modern policing, concluding with a wreath-laying at the altar dedicated to the martyrs of Hot Springs.
From October 22 to 30, CAPFs/CPOs will conduct commemorative events at NPM, including visits by families of martyrs, police band displays, motorcycle rallies, runs for martyrs, blood donation camps, and essay or painting competitions for children. Similar programs will be organized nationwide to honor the valor and service of police personnel.
