JULY 21: The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest steelmaking Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking, has emerged as the primary steel supplier for the prestigious Zojila Tunnel project. Positioned to be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel, this strategic infrastructure marvel is a testament to India’s engineering prowess and commitment to enhancing connectivity in challenging terrains.

SAIL has contributed more than 31,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT Re-bars, Structurals, and Plates, to power the Zojila Tunnel. This consistent and timely supply underlines SAIL’s unmatched reliability and commitment to nation-building. The company’s steel, known for its exceptional quality and strength, continues to serve as the backbone for some of India’s most iconic mega-projects. As the Zojila Tunnel moves towards its targeted completion in 2027, SAIL’s role remains pivotal in ensuring its structural integrity and success.

Strategically located at a daunting altitude of 11,578 feet in the Himalayas, the Zojila Tunnel is designed to withstand extreme weather and terrain challenges. Once completed, the 30-kilometer tunnel will offer vital all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, passing through Dras and Kargil. This project is part of the broader Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway, a critical link that will boost civilian and military mobility in the region while enhancing economic opportunities and trade.

The tunnel’s construction goes beyond being an engineering feat—it represents a strategic asset for the nation’s defense and economic development. The all-weather link will significantly reduce travel time and ensure uninterrupted connectivity, even in harsh winters when traditional routes are blocked by snow.

SAIL’s contribution to the Zojila Tunnel adds another milestone to its illustrious legacy of supporting India’s iconic infrastructure ventures. From the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, and Bandra-Worli Sea Link to the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge and Bogibeel Bridge, SAIL’s steel has been at the heart of projects that define India’s growth story.

The company’s role in the Zojila Tunnel project highlights its enduring mission of strengthening India’s infrastructure framework, reinforcing its leadership in quality steel manufacturing, and shaping the future of the nation with robust and reliable products.
