AUG 30: Secretary, Transport Department, Avny Lavasa, today conducted a surprise inspection of the State Motor Garages (SMG) at Bemina, Srinagar, to review its functioning, workshop facilities, and overall fleet management practices. The inspection was aimed at assessing the efficiency of existing systems and exploring avenues for modernization and transparency in service delivery.
During the visit, the Secretary took a detailed round of the workshop, interacted with staff, and reviewed the condition of the government vehicle fleet. She examined the maintenance processes, spare parts inventory, and the record-keeping mechanism followed at the facility.
Avny Lavasa emphasized the need for adopting automation and digital tools in fleet and inventory management to ensure accountability, minimize delays, and enhance efficiency. She directed officers to upgrade the inventory system with modern software solutions, enabling real-time monitoring of vehicle availability, repair schedules, and parts usage.
Highlighting the importance of the new Car Policy, the Transport Secretary underlined that its effective implementation will not only rationalize the use of official vehicles but also reduce maintenance costs, improve service quality, and bring uniformity in government fleet management. She urged officials to strictly adhere to the policy guidelines while ensuring optimum utilization of resources.
The Secretary further stressed the need for innovative practices, including preventive maintenance, improved workshop standards, and capacity building of technical staff. She noted that embracing modern approaches will help the department deliver efficient, transparent, and citizen-friendly services.
Lavasa also directed that proper documentation and periodic audits be made an integral part of the system, ensuring transparency in operations. She assured that the Government remains committed to strengthening the Transport sector with reforms that focus on sustainability, efficiency, and better service outcomes.
Her surprise inspection sent a clear message of accountability and performance-driven functioning, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to building a modern and reliable transport management system in Jammu and Kashmir.
