5 July: NEW DELHI: The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling substance abuse through the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), a comprehensive initiative that emphasizes prevention, awareness, treatment, and rehabilitation to address the growing challenge of drug addiction.
The programme seeks to reduce the demand for narcotic substances by adopting a multi-pronged strategy that includes public awareness campaigns, counselling services, skill development, de-addiction programmes, and the rehabilitation of individuals affected by substance abuse.
Officials said the National Action Plan aims to create a drug-free society by addressing the root causes of addiction while strengthening support systems for those seeking recovery. The initiative encourages collaboration between central and state governments, educational institutions, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations.
A key focus of the programme is preventive education, particularly among children, adolescents, and young adults. Awareness campaigns are being conducted in schools, colleges, and communities to educate people about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promote healthy lifestyle choices.
The government has also expanded support for Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs), where individuals receive counselling, medical care, psychological support, and vocational training to help them reintegrate into society. These centres play an important role in ensuring long-term recovery and reducing the chances of relapse.
Officials emphasized that rehabilitation is an essential component of the government’s anti-drug strategy. Instead of treating addiction solely as a law enforcement issue, the programme recognizes substance abuse as a public health challenge that requires compassionate care and sustained support.
Community participation remains a vital aspect of the National Action Plan. Local organizations, youth groups, and volunteers are encouraged to organize awareness drives, counselling sessions, and outreach programmes aimed at preventing drug abuse and supporting affected families.
The initiative also focuses on capacity building by training healthcare professionals, counsellors, social workers, and volunteers to provide quality addiction treatment and rehabilitation services. Strengthening institutional capabilities is expected to improve the effectiveness of anti-drug interventions nationwide.
Experts believe that combining prevention with rehabilitation offers a more sustainable approach to reducing drug dependency. Early intervention, mental health support, family counselling, and community engagement are considered essential for helping individuals overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.
The government continues to work with various stakeholders to strengthen the implementation of the National Action Plan through better coordination, monitoring, and public awareness. Authorities have reiterated that reducing drug demand requires a collective effort involving families, educational institutions, healthcare systems, and society at large.
Officials also urged citizens to actively participate in anti-drug campaigns and support individuals undergoing treatment, emphasizing that social acceptance and rehabilitation are critical to successful recovery.
The National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction reflects the government’s broader vision of promoting public health, protecting youth, and creating safer communities. By focusing on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, the initiative aims to build a healthier and drug-free India.
