2 July: AGARTALA: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized a large consignment of banned cough syrup from a goods train in Agartala, Tripura, in a major operation aimed at curbing the illegal transportation of prohibited pharmaceutical products.
According to officials, the consignment was intercepted during a routine intelligence-led operation at a railway goods yard. Acting on specific inputs, DRI officers conducted a thorough inspection of the train and recovered a substantial quantity of banned cough syrup that was allegedly being transported in violation of regulatory provisions.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized consignment was concealed among legitimate cargo to evade detection. Officials are now examining shipping documents, consignor and consignee details, and the intended destination of the prohibited goods.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has launched a detailed investigation to identify the individuals and networks involved in the illegal transportation of the banned pharmaceutical products. Authorities are also probing whether the consignment was linked to an organized interstate or cross-border smuggling network.
Officials stated that strict action will be taken against those found responsible under the relevant provisions of law. Samples of the seized cough syrup may also be examined to verify its composition and determine whether it contains prohibited or controlled substances.
The operation highlights the continued efforts of enforcement agencies to crack down on the illegal trade of pharmaceutical products. Smuggling and unauthorized distribution of banned medicines pose serious public health and safety concerns, prompting authorities to strengthen surveillance across transport networks.
Tripura, owing to its strategic location and connectivity, remains under close watch by enforcement agencies to prevent the movement of contraband through road, rail, and border routes. Intelligence-based operations have been intensified to detect illegal consignments and dismantle trafficking networks.
Officials emphasized that coordinated efforts between railway authorities, customs officials, and law enforcement agencies are essential for preventing the misuse of transport infrastructure for illegal activities. They reiterated their commitment to safeguarding public health by preventing the circulation of prohibited medicines.
Experts believe that such seizures send a strong message to those involved in illicit pharmaceutical trade and underline the importance of robust intelligence gathering and inter-agency cooperation. Enhanced monitoring of freight movement is expected to further strengthen enforcement efforts.
The DRI has urged transport operators and logistics companies to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious consignments to the authorities. Public cooperation, officials said, is equally important in combating illegal trafficking activities.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details regarding the quantity of the seized cough syrup, its origin, and those involved are expected to emerge as authorities continue their inquiry.
