SEP 30: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that India’s pharmaceutical exports, currently valued at nearly $27.8 billion, are expected to cross $30 billion by the end of 2025. Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, he highlighted the sector’s robust growth and global reach.

The Minister noted that India’s domestic pharma market, presently at $60 billion, is projected to double to $130 billion by 2030. He also underlined the rapid expansion of the MedTech sector, which is growing at an annual rate of 15–20%, supported by around 800 medical device manufacturers nationwide.

The MoU, executed through DBT’s Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and the Uttar Pradesh Promote Pharma Council (UPPPC), represents a centre–state partnership to strengthen research, entrepreneurship, and investments across pharma, biotech, and MedTech. The collaboration will advance innovation pipelines, foster startups, enhance skills, and scale up facilities such as the Biotech Park in Lucknow, the Medical Device Park in Greater Noida, and the Bulk Drug & Pharma Park in Lalitpur.

Dr. Singh emphasized India’s transformation into a global biotech hub, citing the growth of startups from just 50 in 2014 to over 11,000 today. He pointed out that India produces over 60% of the world’s vaccines, supplying more than 200 countries, which underscores its role as a trusted provider of affordable healthcare solutions.

Senior officials, including DBT Secretary Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, BIRAC MD Dr. Jitendra Kumar, and UP Government representatives, reiterated their commitment to positioning Uttar Pradesh as a leading hub for biotech and MedTech. They stressed that such collaborations are key to realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and building India’s USD 165 billion bioeconomy into a global leader.
